When I was about seven or eight years old, I had a cousin I considered rich simply because she always looked beautiful. She wore nice clothes, had her own car and from time to time, bought me little gifts while still living with her parents.
In my mind then, this was what it meant to be rich; to be able to buy anything you want without asking your parents. I wanted badly to be like my cousin, but my desire to be little miss independent faded during my late teenage years when I realized that people looked down and talked badly about women like my cousin who had their own money. When she got married, they said she controlled her husband because she had more money than him.
So, I changed my dreams to wanting to marry a rich man. Thankfully, the gruelling years in the university cured me of such stupidity. I agree that there’s nothing wrong in aspiring to marry a wealthy person. but having your own money, no matter how little, is greater than everything. Especially in a patriarchal society like Nigeria where the value of a woman is constantly being appraised.
Here are some reasons why you should aspire to have your own.
Money stops nonsense
This is Naija speak for “money gives dignity.” I am not talking about being Dangote or Otedola, what I am saying is just being able to pay your own bills and feed yourself without asking your relatives/friends for money is a blessing.
Money gives freedom
As a single woman, this is one of the best things about being financially independent. I can buy whatever I want, do whatever I want with my money and only have myself to report to. It is so liberating.
Money gives you a sense of purpose
Have you noticed how when you are broke, it seems like you have no idea what you are doing? Making your own money puts a stop to it. You can make plans about your future, you can support your friends and family. Or, you can donate to a charity and do all the things that are important to you. No one will ask you to explain what you did with your money.
Studies have shown that women don’t like to discuss money and that we constantly undermine our talents and abilities. Ladies let’s put our best foot forward this year. Apply for that job, speak up and be firm during office meetings. Ask for that promotion, start that business, seek financial advice, and invest. 2020 is the year of grabbing the bag. Amen?
