Titi Oyemade On Bringing Women Together to Network and Play

In this interview, we speak with Titi Oyemade of Hang Out With Tee, who is doing an amazing thing in the area of women networking and relaxing.

Titi Oyemade convener of women networking in Nigeria

During the day, Titi works as an Executive Assistant but, occasionally, she brings women together to network and have fun in a safe space, so, of course, we immediately fell in love with her. A few years ago, she had an idea born out of her experience. For about 8-9 years, she had, as often as she could, attended networking events for women. “I attended and volunteered at many women events. Many of them were free events, but they were usually held in Lagos on the Island,” she says. “I had many friends who, like me, lived on the Mainland. Because of time and distance, never got to experience what I did at these networking events.”

Why She Created Hang Out With Tee

The best ideas often come out of a desire to make an impact in the lives of others, and it was no different for Titi. “I felt it was time for me to give back and share the things I had been learning. I also wanted to do a little different—I wanted to create a space that wasn’t just about learning, but was also about relaxing, and I wanted to do it on the Mainland.”

She did this by inviting speakers, many of whom she had met and become friends with at events, to her house. She also invited her friends to come learn, and so, in that informal atmosphere, Hang Out With Tee was born.

“I held the first edition, and it was so informal. By the second and third, it just grew bigger and bigger,” Titi says. Through it all, she has stayed true to her goal. “At many networking events, they talk about the same things over and again, and I also noticed that the topics often did not cater to every one, so I got bored I wanted something a bit different.” At Hang Out With Tee, there’s something for everyone. “I decided to pick topics a little away from the regular, instead of just talking about how to be an entrepreneur—I know not everyone wants to be one,” Titi explains. “So, speakers talk about generally applicable topics, from health to motivation, developing confidence, how to be a career woman, etc.”

On Women Achieving Their Purpose

Why is Titi so passionate about creating physical spaces for women? We wondered, and her answer was, “I learnt a lot from networking events, and met many women I ordinarily wouldn’t have had access to. I made many friends, got ideas that helped me to grow in my work and life, so I wanted more women to be able to experience such things.”

She was also driven by the fact that we live in a society where many women do not get to achieve their purpose because they are caught up fitting into a forced mold. “Some women go to work from Monday to Friday, go to church or mosque once a week, and remain in that cycle for almost 10 years and rarely get to relax, network, or do what they are passionate about,” Titi says. “Instead of going through that, and then trying to live through their kids in future—which is unfair to the kids, but which many of us can relate with, I thought I’d create a forum for any woman, single or married, working or not, to network, relax, and have fun. I want women to learn how to achieve their purpose, and relax while at it.”

On The Importance of Fun

Titi doesn’t joke with the fun part. Hang Out With Tee focuses on learning just as much as it focuses on games, painting, competition, and other fun activities. Just ask anyone who has attended in the past. The best part of it all is, she does it all without charging attendees a dime.

By now, you’re probably wondering when the next edition is. Thankfully, not too far off. On March 18, 2018, Titi will be convening another edition, and she invites every woman to join this opportunity to network, mingle and have fun with other women.
