Surviving the Pandemic, One Netflix Movie at a Time

Woman binging on Netflix shows

Depending on what part of the world you are, you are likely still experiencing a version of the lockdown. Schools are still online. Religious centres are still not meeting. And there is just a general sense of caution in the air. To help you make the most of this time, I share five of the best media (because they include movies, TV shows and documentaries) I have watched since we went on lockdown. You might want to check them out if you have some extra time in your hands.

In no particular here, my five favourite TV things

Never Have I ever

When I first saw the advert for this show on Netflix, I thought “right, another annoying teen romance” but this show is so different. The writers did their homework, the screenplay is so good. I watched the entire first season in one night. At the end, there were tears in my eyes from laughing and crying. Netflix, give us season 2!

My Brilliant Friend

I am normally wary of watching TV shows adapted from books, especially books I loved. Again, I was pleasantly surprised by how much work went into making this show. Watching the show felt like reading the book again. There are so many beautiful shots throughout the show too. It’s streaming on HBO

Still, I Rise

This is a documentary based on the life of Maya Angelou. I have read a lot of Maya’s books; I am familiar with her struggles through life but to actually see footages of her was a totally different experience. Watching this documentary was very inspiring. The simple message is hard times will always come, but you will survive if you stay true to yourself. If you enjoy this documentary also watch “What Happened Miss Simone (Nina Simone) Quincy (Quincy Jones) and The Pieces I am (Toni Morrison). There are all on Netflix

Isoken:

Everyone on my twitter TL was raving about this movie, and when I finally watched it, I could see why. I have seen it like three times since. A Nollywood movie that sensibly threw light on women’s issues, love and marriage? I stan. It’s one of the best Nigerian movies I have seen in recent times.

Three Idiots:

Oldie but goodie! I was browsing through Netflix for something light to watch when I stumbled upon this. I first saw this movie many years ago, had no idea it was on Netflix. Three idiots is the perfect movie to make you laugh, forgetting there’s an on-going pandemic.

I 100% recommend these shows, movies and documentaries. Have you seen any of them?
