Don't let hairdressers convince you to allow them make your hair tight in order to be neat. Remember that it's only those that have hair left that can make fine hair oh.

hair loss

Hair loss is a fairly common problem. regardless of how mild or severe it is, it can become a source of embarrassment. However, it is not entirely hopeless. The first step to solving the problem is identifying the problem and its possible causes. In this post, I want to show you the different types of hair loss that happen, as well as things you can do to reduce the damage.

Types of hair loss:

Traction Alopecia is hair loss caused by excessive manipulation of the hair. It is often due to tight hairstyles or manipulation from woolly scarves, hairnets, and even bonnets. Detangling your hair too roughly and too frequently is another cause. Trichotillomania, also be known as “Hand in Hair Syndrome”, is a type of hair loss caused by constantly pulling or twisting your hair. And in order to minimize the damage it causes, you will need to make a conscious effort to stop it. Finally, Androgenic Alopecia is the form of baldness is primarily caused by genes. It can occur in both men and women and is caused by the increased production of a male hormone (testosterone). There is no known cause.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss may can sometimes be a result of the aging process. It is especially common in women who have passed the age of menopause. Another factor is dryness. Many people may forget to moisturize and deep condition our edges. Dry edges lead to the hair becoming brittle and falling off. Hair loss could also be a side effect of surgery or drugs. This type of hair loss usually corrects itself after a while.

Like I said earlier, not all hair loss is irredeemable, especially if it is caused by manipulation or tight hairstyles. So very briefly, I will run you through a few tips to help reduce hair damage and rock a nice hair length.

Tips for Reducing Hair Damage

1. Stop the Manipulation

Hairstyles should be firm, not tight. Don’t let hairdressers convince you to allow them make your hair tight in order to be neat. Remember that it’s only those that have hair left that can make fine hair oh. Also, scarves and headband often sit on your edges when you tie them. The friction caused by the pressure can lead to hair loss too. So before using a cotton or wool scarf, use a silk or satin scarf or bonnet first to protect your edges and your hair.

2. Moisturise Your Hair

You need to moisturize your edges daily and seal it with light oil. It could be coconut oil, sunflower oil or even olive oil. Also, don’t forget to deep condition your edges too. For more tips on how you can apply moisture to your hair, check out this article.

3. Massage With Warm Oil Weekly

Once a week, heat up a little oil. Make sure the oil is warm not hot, especially if you don’t want to fry your scalp. So massage your scalp gently with the warm oil for 5-10 minutes. Some people swear that Black Jamaican Castor Oil works wonders. However, personally (from my little experience) I think any oil will work as well.

4. Cover your Hair with a Silk Scarf While Sleeping

In a previous article, I talked about Why You Should Sleep With a Silk or Satin Scarf. Check it out here. Pay attention to No. 4. You will be surprised at how much damage your hair nets are doing to your hair and edges.
