Self-care: How to make the most of Valentine’s day as a Single Lady

You can spend Valentine’s Day by looking out for someone other than yourself. You can hand out food to people who don’t have any. Money to people you know are struggling to get by

Single woman happy on valentine's day

Relationships are great. But it is not a do-or-die affair to be in one. These days, it is seen as a marker of some sort. A scale on whether you as a female have your life all figured out. It should not be that way. If you are in a healthy, good relationship for all the right reasons, then, by all means, enjoy it. But if you aren’t, you should not beat yourself up over it. Especially not in this Valentine, “lovey-dovey” period. On the contrary, being single is a time to evaluate yourself. To look at your standards. To self-reflect on the type of person you are and want to be. And, ultimately, the type of person you would want to end up with. It means loving yourself. Unapologetically and recklessly.

So if you are single this Valentine, here are 5 things you can do to make the most of your Valentine’s day

Have a pamper session

We girls, we work really hard. I mean, those bags won’t secure themselves. And those careers won’t grow themselves. We truly do not need anyone to book us a spa date when we can do it ourselves. Relax on that day. Even if you have to go to work, you can book a spa session at then end of the day. Make a full session if you like. Do your hair, manicure and pedicure if you like. End it with a glorious massage and order an uber back home. Relax with some red wine and chill. It’ll be a time you won’t forget. If you’re on a budget, you can easily DIY your own spa treatment. It could be a clay mask, run yourself a Moroccan bath etc. Remember we are still smart, money-saving women.

Celebrate Galentine’s day

I didn’t just make that word up. It is real! If you have not heard the word before, let me explain. Galentine’s day is a fairly new holiday for us girls. It’s an opportunity to grow and strengthen female friendships. It is usually celebrated a few days before or after Valentine’s Day to give women in relationships a chance to also celebrate with their female friends. So, this holiday isn’t just for single women, it’s for all women. It is important for us to have our time together to support and share with each other. Choose your best and most trusted friends and plan a small getaway day for yourselves. It’s totally fulfilling.

Reach out to your loved ones

There are so many other people that love you even if you are not involved in a romantic relationship. I know, I know. You may be thinking that this may not be the time to call your overbearing mom who’s always badgering you on when you’ll meet Mr Right. Or your nosy but caring aunt who always reminds you about how she wants to wear Asoebi. But if these people truly love you and are not toxic to your mental health and space in any way, you can still give them a call. Remind them you love them back. And if all of that comes up, remind them that you are still building yourself. And a late decision is always better than a bad decision.

Do something for someone else

Valentine’s Day has so many origin tales that have been passed through time so much that we don’t even know which one is real anymore. But what all these stories have in common is that it has a foundation of love. Whether it be romantic or platonic.

You can spend Valentine’s Day by looking out for someone other than yourself. You can hand out food to people who don’t have any or money to people you know are struggling to get by. It could be a beggar on the road, the woman that cleans your office, the girl that sells bread by the street. It could be anyone reaching out to you. Trust me, helping someone comes with a very fulfilling and indescribable feeling.

Hope you have gotten some ideas for Valentine’s Day. Do share this post with all your girlfriends. And guy- friends too. I mean, everyone deserves love! Especially self-love.

Go forth and flourish!
