Recently, our very own Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti was nominated for induction in the Rock & Roll hall of fame. See, Fela is the greatest o. And trust Nigerians, we don’t play when it comes to supporting our home-grown success. His nominations sparked conversations on social media about his records and global influence in the music genre. Today, many Afrobeat songs are influenced in one way or another by the trends that Fela set. Me personally, I don’t play with my Gbedu. Naija music hits different anyday, anytime, most of all, afrobeats. Lol
In the spirit of Fela’s latest recognition, I’ve been thinking about women in the music scene putting out amazing songs too. Somehow, we don’t amplify our female afrobeat celebrities as much as we do the men. So, I decided to give a special mention to some of my favorite female afrobeat leads.
Seed by Gyakie
You would be sleeping under a rock if you’ve not heard the song ‘forever’ that have been used in a lot of Tiktok and WhatsApp videos. The song is off Gyakie’s extended playlist and has been a sleeper hit for months now. The songstress Gyakie, is a ghanian singer and songwriter who just dropped an EP titled seed and it contains amazing, well put together songs which talks about self-discovery and life in general; definitely a must listen.
For Broken Ears by Tems
Though Tems is not a new name, I feel her new EP is not talked about enough. The collection features stories on first love with the hit track ‘Damages’ and other notable pieces like the key and free mind. Her songwriting in this occasion was on point as the lyrics were normal everyday experiences which are relatable to many ladies.
Finally by Thabsie
I first heard Thabsie vocals in a South African hit song by Kwesta and I had to look her up. She dropped the single “finally” last year, it was a song on girl power and it had catchy tunes that interested me at the first listen. Thabsie’s sound is very unique and would definitely have you returning back for more.
