The Trump Legacy And The Battle Over Freedom of Speech

After a very controversial election period last November, The United States of America recently has finally sworn in its 46th Presidency, President Joe Biden, making Donald Trump the most recent one-term President the country has had in a long time. Okay, you are probably wondering two things:

  1. What concern us with American Presidency? Sis, the way the world is going, America is kuku our country too o. We watch their movies, wear their clothes, stand on a queue for their visa, so please, let us also put mouth in who will lead. Ehen. Lol
  2. Why was Donald Trump removed? #Sigh, see, only God can answer that one o. Still, even if you’ve been living under a rock, you’d at least know the craziness surrounding the Trump Presidency.

Now speaking of craziness, there was a whole entire riot in the US Capitol, which most people know about. News was that his comments on Twitter incited the violent protests, even though no be today Trump don dey tweet anyhow. To be honest, I was one of the many who was shocked that he won four years ago, but as a lukmon, I just sat and watched things play out. Trump, hiding behind social media has since been known to peddle racist, sexist and violent ideologies on Twitter. The whole thing was just aggravating.

Then enters the social media ban, a whole President, shunned by big Tech companies. I won’t lie, it was well deserved. However, some may argue, what about freedom of speech? But the truth is that freedom comes with responsibility. You can’t walk into a Jewish restaurant and shout, ‘Hail Hitler!’ and claim freedom of speech. You’ll be thrown out, dears. Emotional intelligence and discretion demand that you know when and how to make a statement and when and how not to.

Others have praised Donald Trump for his ability to say what most are thinking but dare not say. It makes me wonder though, why the social media ban came after he was booted out of office and not before? Was there a hint of avoiding backlash in case he was re-elected? Questions, questions.

Of course, it might be also be one kain of me to finally muster the courage to write about Trump now that he is no longer in office. So, on one hand, I am really just tempted to dey one corner and mind. Still, I’m curious to shake things up a bit and ask you: what do you think about the social media ban?
