The Lazy Girl’s Guide to House Chores

A lot of us make the mistake of waiting till ‘house cleaning day’ to do all our chores. But it is more efficient to  clean in between ‘cleaning days’.

Woman getting ready to do chores

House chores are never really at the top of our ‘excited-to-do-this-lists’ but they are a necessary evil. Unless you want to live in a pigsty. Most of us have a ‘clean the whole house day’ and sometimes we let the mess in our living space pile up till that fateful day when it becomes a lot of work. So, I’ve shared a few ways I’ve discovered that can make house chores faster and less tasking.

Do the dishes as soon as you’re done

The earlier you make this a habit, the better for you. Yes, it may be tempting, after a long day at work and cooking to leave the dishes in the sink till the next day, promising yourself that you’ll wash them in the morning. But the next morning, you may end up rushing out of the house with no time left to do the chores. And then you come back in the evening and have dinner and end up with more plates to wash. Avoid procrastinating.

Declutter every now and then

If you’re like me, you may have a habit of keeping stuff, for no reason. The only catch is, the more stuff you have, the more needs to be cleaned, picked up and arranged. Having less also obviously creates more living space and even if you live in a tiny apartment, it creates the illusion of space. So, set a day aside every month or week, whatever works for you and declutter, get rid of things you’re sure you don’t need.

Put things back where you got them from

If you pick a book from your bookshelf to read and when you’re done, you leave it on your side cabinet instead of putting it back in the bookshelf, your living space will get messy much quicker if you make this a habit with other items. And cleaning up will take much more time. Make it a habit instead, to always put things back where you got them. Do this as soon as you’re done using them. This will greatly reduce the time you spend arranging when cleaning day comes.

If something is out of place, arrange it immediately

A lot of us make the mistake of waiting till ‘house cleaning day’ to do all our chores. But it is more efficient to  clean in between ‘cleaning days’. If you see something out of place, don’t ignore it or push it to the back of your mind because it’s not ‘cleaning day’. Put it back immediately or throw it out, depending on what it is. Don’t build a ‘chair-drobe’ letting all your clothes pile up on your chair, waiting for the day of reckoning. If there’s a dress on it and it shouldn’t be there, hang it back up in your wardrobe immediately.
