2019: How to have a smooth and productive school year

A notepad is a college student’s best friend. It’s like an extension of your brain. So, when you have too many tabs open in your head, your notebook/journal help you organise everything.

College students back in school

New Year, New Me. And for some of us, New School Year, New Me as well. ?

There’s just something about January that gets you so pumped about the different aspects of your life. And as much as I will encourage that you should always carry that hype with you throughout the year, few things will beat how hyped you feel in January. So, as a student speaking to other students, let me just say that it is only wise that you put some of that January energy into school and studies.

Here are some things to make you have a smooth and productive school year.

Set goals and aspirations

The first thing to do at the beginning of a school year is to set goals. The next will be to divide those goals into the short and long term. Ensure your goals are precise, achievable and surmountable. Also, set a time span where you can look at those goals and the actionable steps you have written. This will help you check how far you have come and what else needs to be done at every point in time.

Don’t procrastinate

Ever heard the saying procrastination is the thief of time? Well, it’s true! It is also the thief of your sleep, your studying and your good grades. If you have something to do, get it done. This is so that you don’t spend that time doing something unproductive. If you push your tasks to another time, you could lose time for fun. Or more importantly, time for sleep.

Have a written down schedule

A notepad is a college student’s best friend. It’s like an extension of your brain. So, when you have too many tabs open in your head, your notebook/journal help you organise everything. From papers due to study sessions to tutorial classes and even down to what time to eat. Plan it all.

Develop other interests

You are already zoned into your studies and that is remarkable. But you should also try to mix up a few other interests and extracurricular activities. Join a club, do volunteer work, do some sports or other physical activities like yoga, or learn a language (this is my personal favourite.)

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

From your course mates, classmates, lecturers and course advisors. Better to ask and risk not being seen as “cool” than not ask and be lost. Besides, everyone likes a bold person who isn’t afraid to ask great questions.

Don’t forget to have fun!

All work and no play…. you definitely know the rest. Take some time to do the things you genuinely like. And be unapologetic for them.

Also, find your own personal stress reliever. Know yourself. Whatever works for you, go through with it. And you will find that your school year will be smooth and productive.
