I have a confession. I wear rubber flip-flops or ‘bathroom slippers’ (a.k.a Dunlop slippers) to the market! Like I’ve often said, I’ve never cared too much about being fashionable. However, I know that my fashion nonchalance can get to the extreme sometimes. Yet, I have been thinking about the rains for some time now, especially in respect to making my market trips more comfortable. So, I’m considering getting boots to help preserve my shoes and ensure I keep the mess out of my home.
This is not the first fashion adjustment I have made to accommodate the rains. Many of us, regardless of our fashion interests, often have to make adjustments to fit with the rainy season. In this post, The Lady’s Room decided to share a few wardrobe adjustments you can make to make life easier during the rainy season.
Water-resistant shoes and bags when it rains
These could be treated leather or even rubber, but you see your fine leather and suede? Leave them for wearing indoors. Or you can do the Naija party style and keep your stylish shoes in your bag until you get to your destination.
Soles with traction
No matter how well dressed you are, falling in the mud whenever it rains isn’t part of your ideal plan/look. Choose shoes without slippery soles. Avoid flip-flops unless you have plans to swim in the mud.
Umbrellas to accessorise
Black always works, but you can buy a few other nice colours to match or contrast nicely with different outfits. That way, you are a little less bothered by the ‘extra load’ of carrying an umbrella around.
Bright colours
The days can be dull and bleary during the rainy season. Adding a pop of colour to your dark ensemble in a scarf, camisole, or shirt, can keep you cheerful all day. As long as you don’t wear white, though.
Stylish cardigans and blazers
It’s naturally cold in the rainy season, but it sometimes swings between hot and cold extremes over the course of the same day. Stylish blazers and cardigans can go on or off accordingly without making you look drab. If you can swing waterproof hooded jackets for when you’re caught in a downpour, even better.
Leggings, light slacks, and shorts
There are few things more frustrating about being caught in the rain than being soaked in a pair of jeans all day. The clammy feeling will make you miserable. Leggings and slacks on the other hand, tend to dry out quickly while shorts don’t get too wet in the first place.
