Not Every Church Boy is Heaven Sent

Woman confronting her cheating man

So, it’s the season of love, and in that same spirit, I decided to write a quick but fun #throwback post. It happened in 2007. I had a ‘thing’ with this Nigerian music gospel artist. *coughs. I was young, naïve and a little too trusting. I mean, I felt he was a real gospel artist; nothing could go wrong. He’d never lie. Plus, he’d be filled with the spirit and have all the beautiful things of life. All the glowing qualities kept playing in my head.

For the sake of this post, we’ll call him Kunle (lol!). Every morning, Kunle would send me voice notes of him singing. We would spend hours on the phone creating new music and he’d go on and on about how I was his muse! My sisters, he even dedicated a song to me. Let’s call this song, “You make me alive.”

Now, remember I said he is a gospel artist, right? So, he goes on the alter when he should be leading people in worship, and then he sings ‘you make me alive’ while winking at me. Wow! Men are what? Lol!

Kunle didn’t take time to reveal his ways. I later found out that whenever he went for any show or conference in another state, he was busy sleeping with an ex or a new lady. He’d go AWOL for however long he is in the new state. I was in Lagos worried, sending messages and calling but nothing.

I knew it was time to kill that path with Mr. gospel artist. I stopped speaking to him, returning his calls or anything of that sort. Of course, what doesn’t get fed eventually dies and that’s how I moved away from that whole mess. However, I learnt a lot from it. I actually feel it was a necessary period of my life.

First thing I learnt was that religion does not define who would love you and treat you right. I mean, look at Kunle, the minister of God.

Next is, the second a man gives you a reason to feel like you are not his priority, move the hell on! No need for all excuses we often give. You are a full English Breakfast. Don’t let anyone treat you like agege bread and “mineras”!

Another thing I learnt is that religion is not spirituality. “Ji ma sun.” Having gospel artists or even pastors as the yardstick for who you will date doesn’t guarantee that you will be treated right in the relationship. So, girl, expand your horizon!

Finally, Men are Scum lol! You thought I would leave that bit out, didn’t you?

Nope!
