Regardless of the size of your wedding, it’s important to have a maid of honour and a best man. The maid of honour and best man will be the buffer between you, your spouse, and everyone else on your wedding day. They make sure things run smoothly that day, and their duties range from keeping the wedding rings to making sure transportation is sorted, and even giving speeches at your reception. They may even have to make some decisions on your behalf. So as a couple, you both have to decide who fills that role. Here are a few points to consider.
Your best friends
If you have best friends, you should pick them. Yes, even before family or other friends. It’s important that you have someone you can absolutely count on, and who knows you very well. Your best friend knows you enough to know what you are thinking without you having to say anything. We can’t stress how much easier they’ll make your wedding.
Or family
The maid of honour and best man positions are coveted, so if you don’t have a best friend, you should probably just pick a family member. To avoid ranking your friends (that’s what they’ll think, really), especially if you move in a close-knit group, you can pick a family member to stand next to you on your all-important day. You can’t go wrong with this. It ends all arguing and bickering amongst friends…or at least it’s supposed to.
The awesome thing about choosing family is that no (sane) person is going to give you grief about it. Tip: if you pick someone from your spouse’s family, you earn brownie points.
Now, beyond your best friend or family, there are other important factors you should consider.
Supportive/knowledgeable
A maid of honour and best man who are both supportive and knowledgeable are like bride/groom heaven. You want someone who, even though they don’t know where to get stuff from, always knows a guy. So, you can say something as bizarre as, “I want a chocolate fountain and an ice cream sculpture at the wedding,” and their response would be, “Sure, we can do that. What flavour of ice cream do you want?”
Dependable
You do not want to have to babysit your maid of honour or best man. You need someone who will cooperate with decisions, and maybe even take the initiative instead of bickering or dragging you back.
Fun (quite important)
All work and no play… Seriously though, you are going to need some comic relief during the days leading up to your wedding. You need a couple of laughs amidst the stress of planning a wedding. So, it’s something to bear in mind in picking a maid of honour and best man. You and your partner should settle on people who are the perfect mix of fun and useful person.
