It’s hot girl summer season, folks. We are all slapping on sunscreen, remembering our toners and doubling up on gym time. My point is, your body, skin and face are receiving a great deal of attention at the moment.  And a great way to go about this is choosing green, organic products.

It does not get more organic that the things you can actually put in your mouth, right?

There are so many good food ingredients that are equally great for your skin and we are going to be listing a few of them.

After reading this, you should try some out because everyone wants to “look good enough to eat”, yes?

Turmeric

This is a legend when it comes to clearing your skin and improving texture. It is more than an old maiden’s tale because it has actually been proven to work efficiently. It restores the skin’s natural glow and improves the skin’s overall tone while fighting hyperpigmentation.

Oatmeal

It’s good to eat but also great to use on your face. It can be easily used as a scrub when mixed with honey. It isn’t drying like many store-bought scrubs tend to be. In fact, it has really great moisturizing properties. A good tip is to blend it dry and then mix with some milk or yogurt. This combination works wonders when used as a scrub. The lactic acid in the yogurt helps with exfoliating.

Sugar

Sugar is abrasive and, so when mixed with honey, it makes a great lip scrub. It is not the best idea to pay attention to your skin and neglect your lips. When they are occasionally exfoliated, they develop soft supple skin that makes them look good enough to kiss. *wink.

Lemon juice

It’s no news than lemon juice is a brilliant brightener. Used alone or mixed with a mask, it has undoubtedly and visibly lightened up hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Tomato

Asians have been the epitome of clear, glass skin for centuries and one of their secrets is Tomatoes. Tomatoes contain lycopene which is an antioxidant. Antioxidants help fight free radicals and in so doing, reduces open pores and covers black and white heads. Just take a slice and rub all over your face, leave the juice for 15 minutes then rinse away.

Olive oil

Just like it has been nicknamed, olive oil is really liquid gold. It has a variety of uses with moisturising being at the top of the list. Also, it keeps the skin dewy, especially dry areas like the knees and elbows. It can be used as an to moisturiser under your eyes and keep the bags away. You get way more product for a small amount. That is definitely a great alternative to purchasing a tiny bottle of “luxury” eye cream for 10000 Naira or more.

Avocado

You can your make your own spa-worthy mask by mashing up some avocados and blending it in with something else like olive oil, honey or egg whites. Its antioxidants and vitamins helps to slow down ageing properties and leave you feeling generally refreshed.

Cucumbers

Why wait till your next spa day to treat yourself to some relaxing exercise? Cucumbers are great for relieving tension in face muscles and taking care of sunburns. Another great use for them is to draw out moisture from underneath the eyes thereby reducing puffiness, eye bags and dark circles.

Put some slices in the fridge, get them out when they are cool and place them over your eyes. Pair with a mashed avocado mask and Beyoncé’s newest album and have an awesome DIY spa day! Thank me later.

So, the next time you feel like you don’t have enough products or money for some elaborate skin care time, just check your kitchen cupboards and you’ll be surprised at what amazing things you can cook up for your face.

Pun intended.
