For Coloured Girls Rocking Their Coloured Hair

Young black woman rocking her colored hair

Coco Chanel could not have said it better. A woman who cuts her hair is ready to change her life. I’ll add that a woman who dyes her hair is ready to change the lives of others around her.

Have you seen a black queen with natural textures dye her hair? It is beauty. It is art. There is no other way to describe it. It sucks you in and changes your own perspective. Lool. Okay, so maybe I am being extreme but you get my drift.

Essentially, every black woman should dye her hair at least once in her life, and of course, yours truly has tried out a colour or two. If you are thinking about dyeing your hair, here are some of the things I learned from my own experience.

Read instructions

If you’re a DIYer like me, then you are thinking of attempting the whole process yourself. That’s not bad. But, you should make sure you read instructions thoroughly. You’ll make less mistakes that way. My first Dye box had to be returned to the store because all the instructions were written in French and I did not realise until I was home. The next time I was at the store, I made sure I scanned through the instructions to make sure they were understandable.

Protect your hair underneath

Don’t forget, hair damage is real. So don’t forget to use a colour preserver to protect your hair underneath. When the dye is off or when you want new growth, you’ll be grateful you did not skip this step.

Consider a professional

Especially if you’re going to both be cutting and dyeing your hair. You’ll need a second eye and an expert one at that. They’ll take you through it all and you don’t have to worry about your colour being too uneven or your cut being too weird.

Don’t panic

If it’s your first time, don’t worry. It may take some getting used to the idea that you’re now a blonde pineapple head. Or a green chestnut. The first few mirror glances may be hard. But you’ll slowly grow into the look and so will others. And when people see that you’re enjoying your hair, they’ll love it too.

Deep conditioner is your best friend

Especially if you have thick 4c textured hair like mine. You’ll find that you need to deep condition more frequently after dying. To keep your hair soft, retain the moisture and control the texture.

It is all a commitment

Changing your hair colour is also changing your life. You have to dedicate more time and money to hair care, your hair routine will see a couple of changes too. And you will get particular with the products you pick and use.

Confidence is the best hairstyle

How you carry yourself is 90% of the work. Be confident whether your hair is black or colored, straight or textured.

It is all worth it

When it is done properly, dyed hair is amazing and you’ll love it. It’s an experience everyone should say that they have gone through at least once.
