Bringing Back Old School Fashion Trends

Pattern trends are popular for good reason. The much-maligned polka dot, for instance, has reemerged in monochromatic black and white and other subtle colours, retaining the boldness of the pattern without the dowdy/shabby effect.

I often imagine that when people hear the word ‘trends’, the picture that comes to their minds is one of young teenagers in outlandish outfits. This was the picture I saw in my head for a long while. Being regarded as weird and non-conformist, I know I would never have been called trendy.

I’m older now, and while I will most likely still be regarded as quirky, I have gained the ability to see trends for what they are; popular, but not in a sort of general madness of the undiscerning way. There are some trends I can definitely get behind now, simply because ‘they actually rock!’

Whether you’re younger or older, conservative or outlandish, here are a few trends you can also get behind because they rock.

Bold fabric patterns

There are many fabrics with interesting patterns in the market now. Pattern trends are popular for good reason. The much-maligned polka dot, for instance, has reemerged in monochromatic black and white and other subtle colours, retaining the boldness of the pattern without the dowdy/shabby effect.

Bright colours

Subtly patterned outfits in less demure colours are making the rounds now. For plainer fabrics, you have the choice of a pop or a wash of bright colour. Regardless of your choice, now is a good time to break out your favourite colours.

Vintage sundresses

The style of the 40s has made a comeback with modern twists in a pattern, cut, and colour. Florals seem to be winning at the moment for a flirty and girly feel, but fabrics with more dramatic patterns are also just as popular. And these work for women and girls of literally any age too.

Straight-leg pants

Palazzos, flared jeans, and boot cuts have been making the rounds recently, but in whatever form they take, straight-leg pants have also been in and out of fashion for decades now. And they’re back again. Apart from the fact that it just tells you there’s nothing new under the sun, it also justifies why trends aren’t necessarily mindless and foolish. Sometimes, they are popular because it’s great. And straight-leg pants are great no matter your age or personal style.

Asymmetrical Cuts

Asymmetrical tops, skirts and pants designs are making their way back onto the fashion scene. And this time, they seem to be here to stay. This might be due in part to the more subtle than dramatic cuts that are trendy now, but whatever the reason, and whatever your age and personality are, there’s an asymmetrical treasure in the market for you.

These are just a few of the current trends in a style that have stood out for me. What current trends can you literally not wait to get on?
