Date Time with Your Children And Other Ways to Bond

Young mother bonding with her child

It’s very easy as a young mother to guilt-trip yourself for spending 14 hours behind a desk. And on the weekends, when those work emails come, it’s easy to feel frustrated for not always having the simple option of ignoring your boss. The truth is, modern society has still not found the balance between motherhood and professional life.

Young mothers are still expected back at work after three months. And many have to deal with rigid bosses and stifling corporate environments. But it is important that young mothers remember that economic liberty is also a valid life choice. And while it sometimes clashes with needed time spent with the kids, there are a few strategies on how you can creatively spend time with your children.

Read to them

Granted you may get back home when your kids have already slept, but on the occasion that you do get to put them to bed, don’t just tuck them in bed. Read them a story. And this should not only be limited to bedtime, if you have other spare time, read a book with them then as well.

Pay attention to them and listen intently

Ideally, this should always be happening when you’re together. It’s easy to get so caught up with the busyness of life that you find that you’re with your child or children but not really present. You may be on your phone checking emails, or your mind may be wandering to your to-do-list. But work to be fully present and mentally involved during the time you have with your children. Avoid distractions. Have conversations, ask questions and listen intently.

Take them out on a date

Date night is not only for husband or wife or lovers. Have date night/day with your kids as well. If you have a few and can afford the time, set out date day for each one. It doesn’t have to be elaborate but just make sure you’re spending uninterrupted time with them over e.g. a meal, ice-cream and if they’re old enough, a movie. If you travel a lot, this is a nice special way to make it up to your kids when you’re back in town.

Take them to work

Some offices, and countries even, have a ‘bring your kids to work’ day. If you’re a business owner this would be much easier to do. It gives an opportunity for your kids to catch a glimpse of your life at work. It can also serve as bonding time. You could give them very small basic tasks to do or even ask them about their thoughts on some things you’re working on. You’d be amazed at what you can learn from your children.

Involve them in your daily activities

Get your kids involved in the laundry, washing up the dishes, house chores. Make it a game, make it fun and do it together. Although you may not be able to do this all the time. For example, they could be in charge of stacking the plastic bowls you’ve washed, in case you can’t trust them with ceramic plates just yet lol.
