Childhood Memories – Some Funny Things We Did As Kids

It’ll be fun to go down childhood memory lane by reminding you some of the common tricks we partook of as children. Hope it triggers some exciting memories for you. Or at least make you relax and not be too hard on your kids or life in general.

Childhood memories

Most people recall their childhood with fondness, especially when the said childhood was riddled with mischief and antics. Even though I was rather serious and ‘bookish’ as a child, I still had my fair share of childish mischief. The memories sometimes leave me reeling with laughter and sometimes make me feel nostalgic.

So today, I figured it’ll be fun to go down childhood memory lane by reminding you some of the common tricks we partook of as children. Hope it triggers some exciting memories for you. Or at least help you relax and not be too hard on your kids or life in general.

Hiding To watch TV

Sometimes, it was inappropriate movies/programs. Other times, it was inappropriate timing. I remember staying up at night with some relatives to watch home videos. We would do this while keeping our ears alert for the sounds of my parents’ footsteps or bedroom door. We would then pretend to have fallen asleep if we couldn’t switch off the TV quickly enough before they came out of their room.

My parents would turn off the TV, ‘wake’ us up, and send us to bed. It was incredible to feign the yawn and rub our eyes while trudging ‘blindly’ to our rooms. Looking back now, I wonder who was really fooling whom. Lol.

Feigning Ill Health To Avoid Chores

Chores were assigned by rotation in our home. And any day I was to wash plates, everyone would know instantly. By evening,

the sink would be invisible beneath a towering pile of dishes and pots. As soon as my mum entered the kitchen, she would call my name so loudly that I would be unable to pretend that I hadn’t heard her.

My excuse was always

the same: My stomach was aching. She would then console me with a twinkle in her eye, saying that she’d give me medicine when I was done with the dishes. Lol

Sneaking Treats

As with many children, forbidden fruits had the greatest attraction for me too. Now, a lot was forbidden in my house, and I had a sweet tooth. One fateful day, I came back from school to find a beautifully decorated cake on the kitchen counter. It was red and white, a birthday cake my mum had made for my aunt, her best friend. The icing called and I answered. Yum!! Let’s just say I should have kept walking.

Throwing Food Away

My childhood appetite was not the best. I was so picky that even my favourite meal one day could lose its appeal the very next day. This meant that I threw out more plates of food than I care to remember. Now, my mother had a rule which I have also adopted in my home now. She said you could eat all you wanted as long as you didn’t waste food. With this rule in mind, I had to employ a lot of stealth with my food disposal. And I got away with it until one morning when I was in Primary 5. I had hidden my plate of spaghetti in the oven the night before, to throw it out later when I had the chance. I slept off and forgot about it. By the time my mother was done with me that morning, I was looking for a new mum.
