As the 2019 elections draw near, electoral candidates, politicians and we, normal citizens feel the brunt of it. While pre-election activism and commentaries are encouraged, the real change we desire is not entirely dependent on the Government coming into power. Neither is it about the promises being peddled by the politicians. Rather, things start to change when every citizen step into the space of personal leadership, one neighbourhood at a time.
So, beyond the 2019 elections, here are a few lifestyle choices we can adapt to help build the Nigeria of our dreams.
Integrity
Integrity has become such a buzzword these days. Demonstrating integrity is so tangible that it cannot be limited to or thought of as in disregard to a political behaviour. Just like telling a lie in a seemly insignificant situation is still regarded as A LIE, so also, integrity must manifest even in small acts. For example, refusing to collect bribes does not reflect integrity if you still somehow avoid your taxes and get away with it. Playing your part in bringing about change always requires you to act with integrity. If you are known as a person of integrity, people will think twice before approaching you with anything that violates your values.
Social Responsibilities
It’s time we stop depending solely on the Government to get things done. Every one of us as Nigerians is obligated to act for the benefit of the Nation. Through corporate social responsibility, organisations can impact their immediate communities. As individuals, we have to come together to inspire communal change. The big problems we complain about are a result of the small problems we did not solve. The America we see is what the people made of the place. If there is a sector that you are particularly unhappy about, it means there is also an opportunity to do something about it.
Social Behaviours
Your actions or inactions directly or indirectly affect others. This is why there are rules, laws and standards for social behaviour. If you want to see a better Nigeria where the drivers are sane, you will have to play your part. This means not jumping traffic lines or driving against traffic.
The Family
This is where it all begins – The Family. A problem doesn’t exist on its own, there is always a genesis to it. If we complain about terrorism, corruption, domestic violence, abuse etc., then maybe we should also take it further by correcting foundational ideologies. The family, whether biological or not, is the core of every nation. Destructive behaviour starts as observed behaviour learned from the home. A family that instils values such as education and discipline will raise quality leaders. So, instead of focusing on the problem, let’s create solutions and act.
