How To Celebrate Your Birthday At Home During Social Isolation

Young girl celebrating birthday at home alone

I turned 25! Finally! I mean, I don’t know what I expected. Maybe I just felt that turning this milestone age would come with a bit of clarity that I feel has been lacking in this my struggle with adulthood.

Things have been pretty much the same, I mean, it’s only been 3 days so I can’t really tell. Lol. I’ll let you know how it goes.

This article, however, is about how I marked the day. Many of us have had to be at home on our birthdays this past month. I won’t say stuck at home. I’d rather stay safe at home. Because we are trying to flatten the curve, remember?

Well, how do you still get to feel all the love and happiness on your birthday when you can’t be with friends or go out to get drunk? Here are a few ways.

Have a self-care day:

What better way to spend your special day alone that’s to take care of yourself. Prioritize all that makes you happy on that day. Make an at-home body scrub or wax. And use it. Have an at-home spa session with some steam, bath bomb and scented candles. Eat a fruit platter, do some yoga, and just take things slow. Turn your home into a solace for yourself while imagining you’re in your dream island location. Don’t worry, your imagination is more powerful than you think. Lol.

This one is my personal favourite and it’s what I got to do on my day. Along with stuffing myself with an 8” two-layer chocolate cake. Haha!

Have a themed party

Whether you’re home with family or alone, you can have a blast and put a spin on it by making it a themed party. A Bali theme can involve greenery, lots of bright flowers, some pink drinks, and even wearing sundresses at home. You can make it whatever you want. It’s your day. Put on some music that goes with your theme (don’t disturb the neighbours though) and groove to it! A 90s party can have some 90s fade out hairstyle, some bootcut jeans and listen to some pop music. A 60s party will have good old Marvin Gaye on the speakers. Get creative!

Get everyone to join your party

If you’re alone and have a couple of friends you want to make part of your day, you can always do that via video chats. If it a themed party like mentioned earlier, make sure they get out of their pyjamas and into the theme spirit (Except, of course, your party is a pyjama party). Share fun stories via zoom or WhatsApp or Skype and play a few games!

Make a nice dinner

Go all out. Make it all fancy and stuff. It may sound sad to set the table for one. And to drink out of a large wine glass while listening to soul music. But it can be fancy too. If you’re with your significant other, this will be perfect. Try out a new recipe, set out your nicest dishes, light some candles open up a bottle of wine and just generally set the mood and enjoy their company. If it is your s/o’s birthday and you do this as a surprise, it makes it so much better. It’ll be memorable, I promise.

In general, try to enjoy your day. Stay home so we can get through this quickly and life as we knew it can get back to normal. The best gift to have on your birthday is life and good health. So stay safe and stay home.
