Career Crossroads: Between Passion and Financial Stability

It is never easy or straightforward to choose between passion and financial stability - and, in the beginning, it does feel like you have to choose

I am a full time writer, and also a singer/songwriter. I didn’t start off knowing I’d be on either career path. As a younger woman, I knew I had to be productive and successful, so I imagined I would choose a career in the corporate sector and stick with it. I never expected to go from an Economics undergraduate to pursuing interests some people refer to as passion or purpose.

However, the turn in my career path happened at a time when I got an internship opportunity at Goldman Sachs. When I considered what taking it would entail, I realised I was not best suited to the corporate sector. This was not an easy realization, considering that any experience in an organization as prestigious as Goldman Sachs would have boosted my career as an Economist. The journey to where I am now took six years, many ups and downs, and a personal support system for which I am grateful. I often wonder how much the idea of job security and a predictable income influenced my decision to even study Economics. This is a common struggle for many people. It is never easy or straightforward to choose between passion and financial stability–and sometimes, in the beginning, it does feel like you have to choose. So, from my experience, I decided to share a few things to weigh and remember before taking the big leap either way.

Money Is Important, But It Is Not Everything

It’s a common saying that money is not everything. But we all know that it is important. If you choose to follow your passion, don’t feel stupid or inferior to your colleagues in more ‘stable’ and predictable career paths. Your passion is valid. If on the other hand, you decide to go after financial stability (early—because your passion can ultimately lead to that too), also remember that it is a valid stance to take as well. Hunger is terrible enough to kill you before you get a chance to achieve your dreams. The most important thing is to make a choice that is solely yours – one you can live with after all is said and done.

Passion Requires As Much Hard Work

Your dreams require effort. Sometimes more effort than a regular job. You have to be willing to do the work of communicating your passion and skills clearly enough for someone else to visualise and contribute towards it. Besides, difficulty is a part of life and no matter what you choose, it will be tough and there will be moments you feel like giving up. Always remember that following your passion is not necessarily the easier option in life.

There Are No Guarantees

There are people who go after money and fail; some who chase their passions and still fail. There is no endeavour that is fail proof. The only commitment you must bear in mind –whichever path you choose— is that your work ethics and values must not be compromised. Values like hard work, love for learning, patience, resilience, honesty, wisdom, and courage are factors that lead to success on either side of the divide.

They Can Co-Exist

It is possible to have a defined, structured career path and still follow your passions. You don’t always have to choose one over the other. All it takes is effective prioritizing and putting in the work. Also, remember that it is never too late to go for either. Some people pursue more than two careers in a lifetime. Some achieve their dreams at once, while others do so over a long time and at intervals. Either way, what matters is that you do what you love and are proud of, regardless of your age.
