Are You Dating A Version The TikTok Couch Guy?

Woman who looks lost in her thoughts.

If you are one of those avid Tiktok subscribers, then you’ve likely seen or heard about the ‘Couch guy’ story that went viral recently. It was basically a video of a girl surprising her boyfriend after a long trip and time apart. Fam! Let’s just say things turned a shade or two red when the guy in question did not appear the least bit excited to see her. To agree with the internet observers, the boy did hesitate to get up from the crowd. Also, he was seated with two girls, one of which seemed like he was hiding his phone with. It’s a long and complicated thing that I will leave to the eagle-eyed social media observers, but it did remind me of red flags in relationships. Like is this something this lady should use to evaluable her girlfriend status. My take is: of course, yes! But I also want to speak more generally.

Even if you live under a rock, you already likely know what red flags are. They are basically a gut feeling that something is not right, and that it is possibly the best time to dust your slippers and carry it on your head while running far away from that relationship. There are literally a ton of them but let’s talk about these few debatably common ones.

Non-committal and inconsistent people

This is basically what happens when you are in a relationship with someone, but they are not in a relationship with you. They are always wishy washy about the state or status of things, they never make anything official but still want to keep you around. These ones sometimes would even add gaslighting to the mix. Because when you ever bring it up to them, they’ll make it seem like you are over exaggerating.

Ignoring your gut

Now this is a red flag on you because that’s what helps you identify all the red flags. It can be difficult to be intuitive when you are in love, having fun or just trying to finally have a relationship after a series of failed and toxic ones. But sis you still must try to recognize the things that are obviously wrong in the relationship.

Your partner only wants their own way

Some partners can be overbearing and not let their significant others have their way with even the simplest things. This is a big red flag and deal breaker as this can turn into a toxic and manipulative relationship.

You only spend time with each other

This may seem like a good thing but then it can become smoldering. Also, a healthy relationship ought not to restrict you from having your own friends, getting girl time, or doing your own thing. It is okay to spend time apart and pursue your individual interests.

You never have anything to say to them

Relationships are fun despite being a lot of work. And the ones that are the best and stay the longest are usually those between two people that absolutely are each other’s best friends. They can tell each other everything without a facade or judgement and they can laugh at each other’s jokes. And if your relationship isn’t like that then girl you should evaluate.

You’re not attracted to them

You would think this is a rare case, but it is very common to see people in relationships who are not attracted to their partners, but they stay because they are trying to hold on to one thing or another. Relationships need chemistry and attraction and having that can make them happier.

Now that you know a few red flags, there are tons more around you that could help you understand things better and to walk away from situations that don’t contribute to your peace of mind.
