I know how you feel with the joy and excitement that comes this time of the year. After all, it’s the time for jingle bells and shopping for special gifts. It’s also the time in Nigeria that a lot of foodstuffs and clothing prices dangerously skyrocket, causing you to spend more than you do usually. #Sigh.
I suggest you take a deep breath before diving into all the hurried shopping because, without adequate planning, things can go south very quickly. For instance, you don’t want to enter the new year very broke. I’ve been there and it’s not a good feeling. So before you march into the market with your shopping list, here’s what I suggest:
Try shopping earlier
Before the Christmas rush, get some key things. Buy them before the inflation comes in. At least, aim to cover the major part of your shopping so what’s left would be the minor stuff that would not take a huge amount of your funds.
Buy things in bulk
Wholesale prices are always a blessing; get things in bulk. This can be with a trusted neighbour or someone close to you. Last year, I and the neighbours in my compound joined funds to buy a goat for Christmas. It was split equally and we all got quality meat for just a fraction of the price.
Search for discounts
Price slashes are very common during this period but it can be tricky sometimes because 50% off a certain item does not still put it in the price range of your budget. Calculate the actual price before you think of buying, percentages can be very deceiving.
Say no to loans
Especially when you know deep down you have no sure way of paying back. Its better to look for ways on how to stretch your funds with the little you have than borrowing huge amounts and then not having the peace of mind to enjoy it.
Finally…
Remember, you decide your spending habits so when you feel that itch to buy something that is not necessary at all, check if you can buy it two times over without going broke. It’s a safe avenue to stop those itchy fingers.
And before you go wild with purchasing all you need for Christmas, always remember to spend wisely, make a list like Santa and check it twice, look for the best bargain options and in turn enjoy and celebrate the holidays with a free heart.
