Fashion Trends to Expect in 2019

I was tired of having to explain to my mom that my spanks are not underwear but actual high fashion. Goodbye biker shorts. Hello, sensible shorts!

fashion trends to look out for in 2019

I know we are still “giving them” in the holiday outfit department, but, I’m just here to say that we should start looking well ahead into 2019 because the fashion for next year will be hot and scorching!

Whether or not you are “into” fashion, here are some things that all of us are definitely going to be wearing next year.

  1. OVERSIZED HATS

We already caught the bug in 2018, when people started wearing beach hats and bucket hats on regular clothing. From there, the hats just kept getting bigger and bigger and we are expecting even ridiculous sizes for spring and summer 2019. So, if you already own one of those, no need to throw it out.

Additionally, we Nigerians have sort of already incorporated this trend into our Gele tying. With the fancy knotted big Geles already in the scene since late 2018.

  1. FRINGE

Yes, baby! Fringe is back. And it is even better now because instead of fringe being on bags, this time we have it on actual clothes and we have it better.

Fringe on clothing may be tricky to pull off but consider it on outer wear such as a coat or over jacket. It would be the height of chic and daring.

  1. FANCY FLATS

This is great news for those of us that fear we will break our necks while wearing stilettos. Flats are in! Fancy, fun, fashionable fl

ats. With all the extra-ness you can think of. Flats with fringe. Flats with fur. And of course, flats with tassels. If you can dream it, you can wear it.

4. LOOSE SHORTS

Thank Goodness. I was tired of having to explain to my mom that my spanks are not underwear but actual high fashion. Goodbye biker shorts. Hello, sensible shorts! I’m more excited than most for this trend. Trust me.

  5. TIGHT PLEATS

Pleats have been in since my mom was a teenager. There’s no getting rid of it. This time though, they are tighter and smaller and perfect for spring and summer. Which is literally what we have all year round in this part of the world. Perfect!

  1. TIE-DYE PRINT

This is the most interesting one to me. Mostly because I’m not sure it has ever had a scene in the fashion world. And secondly, because I’m Nigerian and tie-dye is our thing. Which means that this £350 Marques Almeida Skirt is something that Iya Mary will gladly make for me for a few thousand Naira notes

  1. The lucky number seven is PUFFED AND BOLD SHOULDER SLEEVES. I feel like there’s no fashion season that doesn’t have a thing or two from the past. This trend is on and off in various forms for every single season. And we love it time and time again.

Other trends that are sure to be present are Faux leather clothes, faux leather accessories, sequins, flatforms and a lot more.

Which of these do you already own? Which of these do you see yourself going for? I personally like the tie-dye the best and I will be rocking a few of those for 2019.
