10 ways to spend your ‘alone’ time

Some people are extroverted. It is natural to them to always be around people. To talk and be listened to. To be the “life-of-the-party”.

Other people love to live in their own bubble. They prefer the company of their own selves. Maybe a good book. Maybe some music. And that’s it.

Regardless of where you fall under, being alone and having some alone time is very essential in my opinion. Sometimes, it’s good to get away from everyone and re-assess your thoughts. Listen to your own voice— as the yogis will say.

Here are 10 things you can do when you’re alone.

Take a walk.

I do my best thinking when I take walks. Evenings are the best. The sun is down, the weather is cool, and I just plug in my headphones and find a not too busy street and walk back and forth. It’s calming.

Try a new recipe.

I’m no culinary expert. But one of my favourite things to do is try to make something I haven’t made before. Something from a cookbook, a YouTube video or from memory (I’d try to recreate a dish my mom used to make when I was little).

Apply a face mask.

I love to indulge in a face mask every now and again. Especially when I’m alone and have nowhere to go. I purposely do this when I’m expecting a delivery. It’s always funny to surprise the pizza guy with a green-faced girl at the door.

Clean your home.

Cleaning is therapeutic. My favourite way to clean my apartment is to put on watch other people in YouTube cleaning out their own apartments. It’s like, “Sis, we are in this together, girl!”

Write a letter.

To your future self. Or your past self. It helps you see how far you have come and how far you are willing to go. It’s very introspective and one of my favourite ways of spending time alone.

De-clutter your phone.

A pet peeve of mine has to be a full inbox. The type that has 4574 unread messages. Take time out to go through those messages and trash the ones you don’t want to keep.

Make your own soap or scrub.

The best things for your skin are natural, handmade and organic. You can pick your own ingredients and make a quick scrub or a turmeric soap in your spare time.

Take a nap.

Do you even need to be told?! Sleeping is probably on my Top 3 favorite things to do in the world! And after a long week, a nap is keyed into my to-do list for my time alone.

Redecorate your house.

Or at least pin things on Pinterest and create a home decor board, get your ideas ready and switch things up in your living space.

Find an affirmation.

Affirmations are important. And when I’m alone, I try to find new ones that I can keep repeating to myself throughout a period. They give you a positive boost and help you look at life better. Everyone needs affirmations.

These and so many other things are activities you can do when you’re alone that are productive, positive and peaceful. Hope you try out at least one of them soon.
