Favourite things for women

So, this title makes me think of ‘My Favourite Things’ in The Sound of Music. I don’t know anything about ‘white copper kettles and warm woollen mittens’, and all that senrenren. I’m a Naija girl. But no matter what part of the world you’re from, every woman has her list of favourite things. A few of mine include isiewu/nkwobi, historical romance novels set in Medieval/Victorian Europe and Scottish Highlands, and perfumes (that’ll be all for now. Can’t tell you guys all my secrets na.). Those things just make me smile!

It’s safe to say there are some things that women world over love, regardless of all our unique differences. Which of these make your list too?

Credit alerts

I dare you to show me a woman who doesn’t like to get credit alerts. Ordinary ‘send me your account details’ sef has us melting into soft sighs and happy giggles. From two year old gbese that someone decides to pay, to monthly salary, or a well-satisfied customer paying for services, we love credit alerts. Surprise credit alerts from loved ones are even better. Amen? And naturally, the reverse is the case with debit alerts. Not too many things can make a girl as sad as a flurry of debit alerts all at once.

Thoughtful presents

Right up there next to food and credit alerts, ranks a really thoughtful present. We love to receive presents from friends, loved ones, and even corporate bodies/partners. A gift that says, ‘I saw this and thought of you’, or ‘I noticed that you liked this so I got it for you’ will have a girl appreciating the giver more. It doesn’t even have to be pricey because when it comes to these things, the thought really does count.

Laughter

We’re not looking for stand-up comedians for friends or partners o. In fact, most women will tell you they want a ‘serious’ person not a ‘joker’. We want to be with people who know what they want out of life and are willing to do what it takes to get there – people we can take seriously. But that doesn’t mean you should be ‘frowning upandan’ and ‘tighting the world to your chest’. Lol. Women have enough challenges in this world. We love (read ‘need’) to laugh and smile. Seriously, a sense of humour and a bit of playfulness is key.

Breaks

Every woman needs a break from time to time. And our lives do get so hectic, that just the thought of a vacation can make us sigh/smile. Very few women would pass up on a chance to take a break and go anywhere in the world or down the road to just breathe/be by herself. And if there’s a spa treat and lots of food/shopping options, toodles! Bye bye! *Insert meme or gif of woman gaily waving*

Bargains

You’ll hardly find a better bargain hunter than a woman. It’s one of the reasons so many men all over the world HATE to go shopping with us. Lol. We have a good idea what we want. We just want to get it for the best possible price. The highest quality at the lowest price? Bliss! Who wouldn’t love that? As we say in Naija, ‘Who no like awoof?’ Don’t blame us, please. Lol.

So, if you’ve been saying you don’t know how to celebrate the women in your life, now you know some of their favourite things. Tell us what some of your favourite things are. We love to hear from you.

I wanted thin arms, a flat tummy, and curves that made my frame appear petite but shapely. I became so obsessed with my body image and how I felt it should look. Body dismorphic disorder is real. And that's how my journey towards body positivity began." Shade Olaoye
