When I was much younger, I didn’t care much about skin and hair care, and I found my mother’s masks and treatments messy and slightly amusing. Then my health got really bad a few years ago, and I started breaking out and losing hair.
The products I could afford weren’t great and the great products weren’t affordable. Without much choice left, I was resigned to trying out DIY mixes and masks just like my mum. The good news is that they work! I haven’t turned up my nose at such homemade treatments ever since.
If you are struggling with your skin or hair, then this article is for you. We have put together a list of seven homemade face and hair masks you can try out.
Honey And Milk
This mask is deeply moisturizing for both hair and skin. It has a softening effect on your hair and skin, making your skin look supple and your hair less frizzy. Leave this in for one to two hours.
Eggs And Mayonnaise
This protein mix will deep condition your hair and help it regain strength. It will also give you a bit of a face lift. The trick is to apply some of the mix to your face, and add coconut or olive oil to the rest of the mask for your hair. Leave in for 30 minutes to one hair, or in cases of major damage, two to three hours.
Bentonite Clay And Apple Cider Vinegar
This mask will purify your skin pores/scalp and soften your hair. You can add a little lemon juice for your face or honey and aloevera for your hair. Bentonite clay is easy to get in health and beauty stores. In the market, you can ask for unsalted chalk or ‘nzu’ and grind it into powder at home. Leave on for 30 minutes to one hour.
Banana And Coconut Oil
For hair or skin, you can add honey if maximum moisture is your aim. This mask will deeply moisturize dry skin or hair, and repair any flaky skin or brittle hair. Leave this mask in for two to three hours.
Avocado And eggs
To deep condition dry hair, you can blend an avocado and mix it with egg yolk. For oily hair or skin, mix with the egg white instead. For neither extreme, use the whole egg. This will restore shine to either hair or skin and give you a mini face lift. Leave this on for about an hour.
Yoghurt And Honey
This mask will tighten and brighten your skin as a result of the lactic acid and probiotics in the yoghurt. To restore moisture and shine to your hair, and reduce shedding, add a tiny amount of apple cider vinegar to the mix. Leave in for 30 minutes to one hour.
Lemon And Turmeric
I personally wouldn’t advise that you use this on your hair except you want to lighten it. But it’s great for fading spots and brightening your complexion. The fresher the lemon juice, the better. Leave on for 15-20 minutes.
We hope you meet your beauty goals using these ingredients from your kitchen. What homemade DIY mixes are your favourites?
