For the love of naija movies
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on Google Share on LinkedinEmail

Naija movies have come a long way from the days of people wearing white and playing ghost. Lol. Our content has more range and improved quality, but the best part is, ever since movie streaming giant Netflix launched the Nigerian arm, popularly called Netflix Naija, a lot of movies that previously only showed in cinemas or were not easily accessible have now been uploaded on Netflix Naija. Yaay!! Now all those previously exclusive films are now a swipe away. All you need is a mobile phone and good internet connection.

The thing with Netflix though is that because there are so many movies, it is difficult to choose what to watch. For this month of July, here are five interesting Naija movies that you should definitely add to your watchlist.

Skin

This is probably the most talked-about Nigerian documentary on Netflix right now. It was produced by Beverly Naya who used the platform to talk about the colourism in the entertainment industry and in Nigeria generally. The documentary isn’t perfect, but it raises a lot of questions and awareness on the issue of skin bleaching in Nigeria.

4th Republic

This is a personal favourite. The story is all Nigerians are familiar with. Kate Henshaw did her best as an actor to carry this movie. One amazing fact about this movie is how it discusses with nuances salient Nigerian issues

Light in the dark

The opening scene of this movie kept me hooked! It is a quiet film in my opinion. Not many big things happen, so if you don’t pay attention you might lose the story. It is the little things that happens that makes this movie really amazing. And Rita Dominic killed the role as a lead character.

The Set Up

This movie isn’t your traditional Nigerian movie; the storyline is very different and captivating. Adesua Etomi, Kehinde Bankole and Dakore Egbuson brought their A-games to this movie. It is a story of family, greed and survival.

Royal Hibiscus Hotel

This is a soft romance-comedy. Remember that rich boy meets girl and lies about his wealth mills and boons stories we read as teenagers? This is not too far from it. It’s a tender film you can enjoy with your homegirls on a Friday night.

I wanted thin arms, a flat tummy, and curves that made my frame appear petite but shapely. I became so obsessed with my body image and how I felt it should look. Body dismorphic disorder is real. And that's how my journey towards body positivity began." Shade Olaoye
