Do you ever stumble on a song or an artist and wonder where they’ve been all your life? I love good music, especially when it’s from a Nigerian (woman)! These 5 women are musicians whose songs you should definitely be listening to. While each of them has a unique sound, they all share in common lyrical depth and creativity. They’re at different stages of their careers—from single releases to EPs and album releases—so I’ll pardon you if you haven’t heard of some of them. Fix it though! I won’t talk too much about each, coz their songs are here to speak for them.
Falana tops my list because her new EP, Chapter One, is currently on repeat. Falana’s music will have you fall in love with her, and when you someday get to see her perform live, you’ll understand that there are depths and depths to this woman. Her style is also a reflection of all the things I love about her. To start you off, here’s a fave from Chapter One. It’s titled ‘Repeat’, and it’s the ‘keep going’ song I didn’t know I needed.
Moving on to something else new. Gemma Ofili’s voice is soothing and rich, and so are her lyrics! Her first song, Use My Love Song, was released a couple of weeks ago and it makes me eager to hear more from this new artiste. I look forward to more from her in future.
When I stumbled on Dinachi’s music towards the end of 2017, all I could think was, how am I only just hearing of her?! Every song on her album, Parables, is perfect. Dinachi’s lyrics make me feel all the emotions she’s writing about, even when I have no personal experience of the same. It’s the way she sings, the way she writes, the way the music is arranged.
Jemimah’s single was released 2 years ago, but it’s still a favourite, and it’s not just because she’s a TLR writer whose mind I love! Her single; Suddenly shows off Jemimah’s beautiful voice and the music makes you want to smile and dance at the same time, because, who doesn’t want to know they’re loved!
Our neighbour from Ghana, Sutra is an artiste’s artiste. She’s a writer and musician and her work is always fresh and creative. Her 2018 EP, Marrow, accompanied her book of poetry and prose. Everything she does is honest, soul-stirring art, and you’ll fall in love with this young lady.
