Celebrating A Second Birthday in a Pandemic – Na Wa!!

Girl celebrating her birthday with mixed feelings
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on Google Share on LinkedinEmail

You know when you plan everything to a Tee and expect it to go exactly as envisioned, only for all the plans to go up in flames? That’s exactly how my last birthday went. It was a milestone birthday that I had thought about for years. I planned to be out of the country, to tour Europe precisely focusing on London and France. It was so magical in my mind. However, a year before the day, I figured that I couldn’t leave the country as I would be in the middle of my program. I settled for a smaller celebration. Friends, a pretty dress, amazing food and gifting myself a flight ticket to explore the world later.

Then March came and so did Covid into Nigeria. When I tell you, I was heartbroken! What was supposed to be my “rite of passage” birthday ended up more like a hangover slumber sad pity party for one. I had cake and food though, and even though I ate all of it on my own, I was still grateful for that.

It is now a year later and Aries babies are realizing that we are about to have our second birthday in the middle of a pandemic! Cursed, me thinks! lol. Zodiac signs aside, if you just had or are about to have your next birthday then you know what I’m going through right now. Thankfully, I have been off social media for the most part, since the year started. And so, I have saved myself from seeing all the perfect birthday shoots and cakes and parties. I’m a simple girl with simple needs this time around.

I’m keeping it home bound

I still have a ton of anxiety about the whole virus and so, I will be spending my birthday with as few people as possible. It will definitely involve me in pyjamas and a lot of zoom calls with my mom, siblings and friends.

I’m eating as much as I possibly can

Modus operandi? Stuff yourself till you can’t anymore. Cake, pizza, ice cream, party jollof? Name it and I’m going to get it and eat it. No cooking for me, I’m just gonna lay in my sweatshirt and watch a rerun of friends while stuffing my face with store bought food. Trust me, that’s the dream of any girl in their mid 20s.

I’m praying and planning a lot

Self care to me involves making mood boards or getting down on my knees to pray. My birthday in a pandemic is no exception and in fact, that is how I will be starting the day.

I might even break my social media fast

Okay, this one might not happen because I made a strict promise to stay off for a few months. So, I will be blasting albums from Giveon and Justin Bieber instead.

I’m buying something ridiculous for myself

Another form of self care for me is buying something for myself with money that I do not have. Lool. I am big on giving things to myself and that day won’t be an exception. Actually, you should do this often. Birthday or not, problem no dey finish. I highly recommend it.

Do me a favour and wish me a happy birthday. I will be reading and watching. Cheers to me!

I can’t imagine what their budgets look like for these things. If you have a small business you may say, ‘oh I’m just starting, I can’t spend money for branding yet.” However, every time you pass on a potential brand opportunity, you pass on potential consumers. So if you are wondering how to scale your business’ brand visibility, here are a few tips." Link in bio.
